I’m really enjoying this one. I used to be an avid fan of games like Sim City, Transport Tycoon and the like. I still wonder why Sim City is still not available for the iPad, but then again I didn’t really enjoy it that much anymore on the iPhone. Somehow, shorter and less involving games are more appealing to me nowadays.
The main goal of Virtual City HD is to organize transport routes between buildings. But you also get to build homes, factories and environmental or entertainment upgrades like a theater, a plaza or a fountain. Build a hospital to automate taking care of the sick and build a firehouse so you don’t have to take care of the constant outbreak of fires (fires don’t spread, by the way, but burning factories and farms don’t produce anything and burning homes don’t have residents). And be sure to build lots of trucks to carry all the goods around to where they’re needed and a couple of garbage trucks so your city stays nice and shiny.
You can either play in linear story mode or, once you’ve unlocked it, in freeplay mode. The game is separated into regions of the US and the freeplay regions get unlocked as you complete the regions in story mode.
Games are automatically saved when you quit the app so you can restart where you left off. There’s also an achievement system and you can post progress to Facebook, if that’s your thing.
Virtual City HD is $9.99 in the App Store. There’s also a free version available which is basically a tutorial for the first couple of levels that gives you a very good feel for the full game.
