My feeling is we’d loathe our email clients a lot less.
I’m also guilty of using my email client (Apple Mail) for more than just ephemeral communication. I use it as an archive, which, despite that I know I should be keeping all that stuff in a different place, has served me well over the years when I needed to find something. What I have been able to restrain from, though, is using my email client as a todo list. I use TaskPaper for that.
